At Narrow Keys, we’re on a mission to make piano playing more comfortable and empowering for pianists with smaller hands.

Co-founded by Linda Gould and Kathy Strauch—two women with decades of experience and a shared passion for accessible music-making—we design digital pianos with narrower keys that don’t compromise on touch or tone.

Our flagship model, Athena, is the result of years of advocacy, research, and collaboration with pianists around the world.  Athena is here and shipping now!

We believe every hand deserves to play with ease, expression, and confidence.

Our Narrow Key Journey

The Spark

It began at the University of Victoria in the 1970's. As piano performance majors, Chris Donison and I spent days immersed in the masters, yet we shared a quiet frustration: the piano was built for hands larger than ours. We were serious artists facing a physical barrier. One morning over a cup of coffee we realized we weren't the problem—the keys were.

The dream was simple: To play without pain.

The revolution stayed a dream for fifteen years—until a chance encounter shifted the course of piano history. David Steinbuhler checked into Chris’s BnB in Ontario, and a shared vision was born.

The Breakthrough

Everything changed when I met David Steinbuhler in 1996.

This photo captures the day I ordered my first 5.5" retrofit for my Yamaha G2—and as it turned out, it was David’s very first order.

For the first time in my life as a pianist, my piano finally fit me. That moment sparked a nearly 30-year journey to bring this same ergonomic freedom to pianists everywhere.

Finding the Movement

I wasn’t alone. Meeting pioneers like Carol Leone at SMU in Dallas proved that a global shift was happening.

This photo captures us at Carol's first narrow-key retrofit from David Steinbuhler in the late 1990s—the moment a university program for narrow keys became a reality.

Our connection came full circle in 2025: during her sabbatical in Europe, Carol took her new Athena with her, ensuring she could continue her professional practice on the 5.5" standard, no matter where in the world she was.

The Power of the 5.5"

Performing Rhapsody in Blue with an orchestra on my D.S. 5.5 retrofit. For the first time, I felt the true power of Gershwin’s big chords under my fingers. No tension. No compromise. Just music.

The Pioneers

Kathy Strauch (a member of PASK) meeting with the brilliant minds behind PASK (Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards) and Stretto Pianos. Hannah Reimann, Carol Leone and Rhonda Boyle - the women who refused to let "standard" be the status quo.

The Global Connection

Visiting the home of Erica Booker in Australia - a co-founder of PASK and a renowned Suzuki teacher trainer. Erica’s living room is a testament to the movement, housing four acoustic pianos with four different octave sizes: 6.5", 6.2", 6.0", and 5.5".

I had the joy of performing Maple Leaf Rag on all four back-to-back!

Now, Erica has added an Athena narrow key digital piano to her collection, proving that whether acoustic or digital, the 5.5" standard is a vital tool for the modern performer and educator.

A Shared Vision

Rhonda Boyle, co-founder of PASK, visiting me in Canada. We shared more than just a love for narrow keys; we shared a vision for a future where every pianist can play with ease.

It must have been Christmas!  We are sitting at my D.S. 5.5 retrofit dreaming of a digital version.

The Birth of Athena

Linda Gould and Kathy Strauch team up to create Athena. While David Steinbuhler’s retrofits revolutionized our acoustic pianos, we saw an opportunity to enhance the movement with a high-quality digital option. We created Athena to provide a seamless transition between the acoustic and digital worlds, making the 5.5" standard accessible for home practice, the studio, and the stage.

Free as a Bird

Linda Gould performing outside with her "Dragonfly Sister," Susan Gould. Susan (with her large hands) plays her traditional keyboard, and I finally have my Athena narrow keys tucked into my Keyhole grand shell. Playing Brahms together in the fresh air—both of us free, both of us empowered.

In 1996, master narrow-key piano builder David Steinbuhler installed a 5.5-inch octave keyboard in my acoustic grand piano. For someone like me—who can barely reach a standard octave—this changed everything. I earned my ARCT and BMus with distinction by developing workarounds for my small hands. But the truth is, much of the repertoire I longed to play was literally out of reach. Loud or rapid octaves were painful. My hands were stretched to their limits, and each strike felt like an injury waiting to happen. That all changed with narrow keys. On narrow keys, I’m pain-free. I can still play a regular-sized keyboard when needed, but the tension returns. The reality is, I’ll never be able to comfortably reach a 9th on the standard 6.5-inch octave. On narrow keys, I feel free—able to play with expression, control, and strength I never had before. Playing advanced repertoire once meant pushing through pain. In my twenties, I developed chronic wrist issues that required surgery. A cyst had formed inside the bones of my wrist and was pressing on a nerve. I was playing on the wrong size keyboard. In 2005, I performed Rhapsody in Blue with the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra on my narrow-key grand. It was a thrilling experience—something that simply wouldn’t have been possible on a standard-sized piano. Now, with ATHENA, narrow keys are finally portable. I perform on them all the time—with joy, confidence, and power. Bringing ATHENA to life has been more than a personal dream—it represents a turning point in piano design and performance. For the first time, pianists with smaller hands have access to a high-quality, professional instrument that truly fits their physiology. ATHENA isn’t just a product; it’s a movement. We’re challenging a century-old standard and reimagining what’s possible at the keyboard—unlocking artistry, preventing injury, and creating equity in a field where too many have been left out simply because of hand size.

I began piano lessons in my mid-forties. We had bought a piano for my young daughter, and since it was sitting there in the living room, I thought—why not give it a try? As an adult beginner, I found myself in recitals alongside other women students, most more advanced than I was. I remember my teacher discussing their pieces—often filled with four-note chords—and casually saying, “Just throw one away!” That became my reality too. I quickly learned that, with my small hands, playing advanced repertoire as written was out of reach. A few years later, I discovered narrow keys on acoustic pianos and invested in a set for my own instrument—a mid-life crisis purchase I’ve never regretted. That decision transformed my experience of music. I found the PASK community online and began to connect with others who shared the same struggles and the same vision. Without narrow keys, I likely would have quit. Playing just wouldn’t have been fun—or fulfilling—enough to keep going. One memory, long buried, resurfaced as I learned more about piano and hand size. I was in college, visiting my sister, and we could hear her 10-year-old daughter practicing in the next room. My sister and brother-in-law—both pianists themselves—lamented that despite her dedication, their daughter wouldn’t improve much until her hands grew. They knew, even then, that standard-size keys hold children back. We believe everyone deserves a piano that fits. Whether you’re a child, an adult beginner, or a lifelong player with small hands, you should have access to an affordable instrument that lets you play at your best. That’s why we’re working so hard—building the manufacturing infrastructure to bring narrow keys to the digital piano world. Bringing ATHENA into the world has been a labor of love and determination—so that pianists of all ages and hand sizes can finally play with comfort, confidence, and joy.
